And it feels kind of great. I’ve only got two followers so far, but friends (and people I don’t even know) are sharing my pieces. I feel honored.
The topic I’m writing about is important, and there’s only so much traffic it’ll get after being posted on a blog. The Odyssey publishes to a wider audience. Hopefully as I gain more of a following, more people will start seeing my work.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of having my work be seen by thousands of people. But the content of my pieces thus far need to be seen. My newest article highlights the role of alcohol in rape cases and courts and how said role has started to affect the millennial generation.
I know, I know. Millennials. But we’re important. We will eventually be the older generation providing wisdom to the younger generation and if we don’t education ourselves now, what kind of world will we be living in 40 years from now?
I don’t know about you, but I’d like to be in a world that fully recognizes the danger of alcohol. I’d like to be in a world where we don’t subtly hint or joke about rape being okay. I want to be part of the generation that breaks down rape culture in the United States. And for that to happen, we need to get to the root of the problem, pull it out from underneath us and educate ourselves on what we can do differently to reverse the effects.
I don’t want to have to fear for my future child every time they leave the house at night or go to bars alone. I know the problem may never go away, but it can be made better by living in a world that doesn’t support rape culture.
Feel free to check out my stuff on Odyssey. There are only two articles so far, but there’s more to come. The next one should crack open some doors if I can figure out how to write it effectively.
