A Year of Dance

I can’t even begin to express how awesome this first year has been because of all the opportunities on campus. I found writing friends I can bond with, jobs where I can enjoy what I’m doing, and a recreational activity that I love more than I thought I ever would: dance.

Initially, I joined the dance team because I wanted to do something with my flexibility. For eight years, I was a twirler… I didn’t want all the kicks, spins, leaps, and splits to go to waste. Champlain doesn’t exactly offer sports, though (it’s a predominantly gaming school), and the closest thing I could find to baton was the Champlain College Dance Team. All of the girls and guys on the team are so nice and welcoming–even though I missed the first day.

All of us sporting our super cute sweats!

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous/scared going into it. I expected the coach to be super intimidating and to be surrounded by tons of seniors (and students in general) who knew exactly what they were doing… But I wasn’t. There were other first-years there, other students who didn’t entirely know how to dance, and the coach turned out to be incredibly experienced, but really nice (did I mention she owns her own studio?). I was able to pick up on most of it pretty quickly and, while it has gotten harder, I’ve loved every minute of it. We even got team sweats!

My only regret is that I didn’t get to know a lot of the girls on the team as well as I would have liked. But, hey, it’s never too late! A majority of them weren’t actually seniors and, based on how many had come back from prior years, they’ll be there next year. Next year… We’ll get a whole new group of freshman. That’ll be pretty exciting. And I think now that I’ve become more outgoing, it’ll be easier for my to make an effort to know them next year. They’re all such wonderful people.

One of the guys on the team, Jeremy, is actually a filmmaker here–he shot a music video for us around Christmas time. It was to one of Justin Bieber’s Christmas songs (Bieber, I know…) and the dance was just adorable! We all wore Christmasy colors, red lipstick, and festive socks. The coach even had her kids run around in the background. Jeremy even managed to find a way for us to have “snow” in the gym. I was only three months into college and I got to be part of a music video for the dance team. I think it’s something I’m definitely going to treasure for a long time.

This entire first year has been such an eye-opening experience for me…. College really does get better (for most people) after high school. I was so timid, so shy when I came here. Honestly, it was hard making friends at first. I didn’t really know where I was going to fit in or who I should get to know… I didn’t know who I could trust. But it didn’t take long. Once you find one person, the rest starts falling into place. You meet the people they know, and then meet more people, and then more, until eventually, you figure out who you really want to be friends with and who you should be surrounding yourself with. I may end up joining more groups in the next few years, but I do know one thing: I’m going to stick with the ones I’ve come to love.

For anyone who’d like to watch this super duper adorable music video, you can find it here!
